How to Celebrate a 3-Day Weekend in Colorado

Martin Luther King Jr Day is just around the corner, as well as President’s Day in February. For many of us, this means a 3-day weekend where we don’t have to go to work, and the kids are out of school. Are you looking for something fun and local to do? Check out our list of 3-day weekend activities in Colorado:

1. Attend the Annual All People’s Breakfast in Colorado Springs (On MLK Day)

Hosted by Colorado College, the annual All People’s Breakfast is a community-wide celebration of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Beginning with breakfast ($7), attendees can expect to see an art exhibit featuring work from Colorado College students, a performance from the Women in Red Gospel choir and hip hop artist/activist Kevin Mitchell. After breakfast, the public can join in a community rally and march from Worner Campus Center to Acacia Park. Learn more on the Colorado Springs city website.

2. Take a Winter Hike

Even in the winter, Colorado Springs trails are beautiful for hiking. While the average temperatures this time of year are between 30 and 40 degrees, we do have warm days. Take last weekend for example, when it was nearly 66 degrees!

Not only are the trails less crowded, but Pikes Peak and the surrounding mountains are just as scenic and breathtaking with fresh snow and frostbitten soil. If the weather is right (because you shouldn’t hike during a blizzard or approaching storm), grab a day pack and hit the trails. Make sure to dress warm and tell someone where you are going!

3. Head for the Mountains

One day outdoors not enough for your mountainous soul? Pack the car, dust off your skis, and head for the mountains with family or a group of friends! While the slopes are usually quite crowded over the holiday weekends, 3-days in Colorado’s charming ski towns are worth the hassle. And if skiing or snowboarding is not your thing, head for the smaller, less touristy mountain towns where you can spend your weekend reading by the fire.

4. Crawl Colorado Springs’ Local Breweries

If you’re staying in town (and of drinking age), spend an afternoon tasting fine ales at Colorado Springs’ local breweries. With over 20 craft brewhouses in the Pikes Peak region, there is a delicious beverage for everyone! Find a full list of the Colorado Springs breweries here.

Have a safe and happy 3-day weekend everyone! And Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
