4 Tips to Prepare for Moving Over Memorial Day Weekend

Planning to move in or out of your home over Memorial Day Weekend this year?  Let’s talk about that…

First, getting moved to your new destination is hopefully an exciting and happy prospect for you.  But, of course, the move itself involves thinking through a lot of details, making a myriad of things happen and hoping it all comes together nice and tidy in the end. Details like having internet in place on move-in day is a really big deal, right?

So it’s no surprise that moving is ranked in the top five most stressful things in life.  Don’t be hard on yourself if you’re feeling anxious and overwhelmed about the whole thing.

After you are done celebrating that you are Under Contract to either buy or sell, you should discuss with your agent the deadlines outlined in the Contract to Buy and Sell Real Estate.  Thoroughly understanding the process between signing the Contract and closing day can help you make wise decisions about spending money especially in regard to making any non-refundable deposits for moving.

Here are a few tips from our expert real estate team to help you prepare:

1. Book Your Moving Trucks ASAP

Once you are comfortable with the solidity of the Contract, go ahead and make the reservation for your moving truck as soon as possible. Because Memorial Day Weekend is one of the busiest and most popular times to move, many of the Colorado Springs moving companies are already filling up. It is especially important to call ahead if you are hiring a moving company to help with transporting and packing boxes. If you’re not sure where to begin, take a look at this list of BBB-accredited moving companies in the Pikes Peak region.

2. Call Your Family and Friends, Plan a Party

Getting the support of people who care can make a big difference to the whole moving experience for you.   If you have friends and family local to Colorado Springs that you are hoping will help out with your big move, we advise you let them know now. Whether it’s a summer or the three-day Memorial Weekend move, many people make plans to travel, go to the mountains, or host summer kickoff parties. If you are looking to solicit help, be sure to order pizza and have margaritas or another favorite drink to relax and have some fun at the end of the move day to celebrate their invaluable help and support.

3. Prepare For Road Closures

This tip is specifically for homeowners moving in or out of a property in a heavily-trafficked area, such as Old Colorado City or Manitou Springs. Memorial Day Weekend is a popular holiday for events, parades, and marathons in the Pikes Peak region (for example Territory Days) so make sure to check for road closures or parking restrictions on the day of your move. The Gazette, KOAA, and KKTV often announce this information the week before the holiday weekend.

4. Make Hotel Reservations

If you are going to need a hotel room the day before or after your move, we suggest booking it now. In 2017, Colorado Springs welcomed 20 million visitors—many of whom visited during the summer season which officially kicks off on Memorial Day Weekend. And the city expects that, in 2018, we will see even more tourists. Are you going to need accommodation over the holiday weekend? We suggest you make reservations now.
